STEP 2Open ExtensionOpen the Thunderbit Chrome Extension, then select the "Break Even Calculator" tool. In the "Calculate Break-Even Point" tab, enter your inputs as positive numbers: fixed costs, variable cost per unit, and price per unit. STEP 3Click the Calculate break-even ButtonClick the "Calculate break-even" button to generate the result. Thunderbit will calculate the contribution margin per unit (price per unit minus variable cost per unit), divide fixed costs by that margin, and round up to the nearest whole unit to show the break-even point in units. Review the calculation summary, then copy the output or export it to Excel, Google Sheets, Airtable, or Notion as needed.

Calculate a break-even point from your costs and price

Enter fixed costs, variable cost per unit, and price per unit to calculate how many units you need to sell to cover total costs. The Break Even Calculator uses contribution margin to translate your cost structure into a clear sales target. It’s built for founders, finance teams, and operators who need a quick, reliable way to validate pricing, plan launches, or sanity-check unit economics.

Validate pricing with contribution margin checks

The calculator flags cases where break-even cannot be reached, such as when price per unit is less than or equal to variable cost per unit. This helps you catch unprofitable pricing or rising unit costs before you commit to a plan. It’s useful for ecommerce and product teams reviewing margins, and for service businesses estimating whether a packaged offer can cover overhead.

Plan sales targets and budgets for new products

Use the break-even units output as a practical target for go-to-market planning, inventory decisions, and budget discussions. Teams can compare scenarios by adjusting fixed costs (tools, headcount, rent), variable costs (COGS, fees), and price to see how the required unit volume changes. This supports business cases, launch planning, and monthly forecasting without building a full spreadsheet model.

Use it during quarterly planning, vendor negotiations, or pricing reviews to explain the impact of cost changes. It’s also helpful for analysts and consultants who need a consistent method for quick unit-economics checks.
