How to Check a VAT Number Using Thunderbit
STEP 1Download and InstallDownload and install the Thunderbit Chrome Extension from the Thunderbit Chrome Extension Download Page. Once installed, log in or create a free account to get started.
STEP 2Open ExtensionOpen Chrome and launch the Thunderbit extension from the toolbar. In Thunderbit, open the VAT Checker tool and select the "Check a VAT Number" tab. Enter the VAT number in the "vat_number" field using the correct format (for example, include the country code like DE123456789). If your VAT number does not include a country code, use the "country_code (optional)" dropdown to select the correct country to improve validation accuracy.
STEP 3Click the Check VAT Number ButtonClick the "Check VAT Number" button. Thunderbit will validate the VAT number against official validation sources (such as VIES for EU and Northern Ireland where applicable) and return a table with the normalized VAT number, detected or selected country code, and a validity result. If available from the source, Thunderbit will also display company name, address, and registration details, along with the source used and the time of the check. Export the results to Excel, Google Sheets, Airtable, or Notion, or download as CSV or JSON.

Validate VAT numbers against official sources
Check whether a VAT number is valid by validating it against official VAT databases such as VIES for EU and Northern Ireland where applicable. Enter a VAT number with a country prefix (for example, DE123456789) or provide the country code separately to improve accuracy. This helps finance teams, sales ops, and procurement reduce tax risk and avoid processing invoices with incorrect VAT IDs.
Return normalized results with company information when available
Get a structured result that normalizes the VAT number (uppercase, no spaces), detects or uses the selected country code, and reports a clear Valid or Invalid status. When the source provides it, the tool also returns registered company name, address, and any registration details. If the database does not return company data, the fields stay blank, keeping results accurate and audit-friendly.
